What to plant... what to plant...

(Never. Again.)
---
So, this is photo evidence of the minor squash disaster I had this summer. Clearly, squash does not belong in a Self Watering Container. But now I have an empty planter and it's nearly August. It might be too hot for spinach- maybe with some shade it would work... It is likely too hot for most lettuce, but buttercrunch might do ok... Asian mustards would probably fare well, but I'm not really into mustards right now. Maybe mesclun mix? Arugula? It's too late for pretty much everything else. Any suggestions?

Look at J L Hudson http://www.jlhudsonseeds.net/
and get something exotic. If nothing else you'll have had some fun looking at everything.

Kale?

Beets, carrots, kohlrabi, radishes, even peas might do well. And any greens will grow, too.

Fetuses!

With water and a little bit of your own blood, you could grow a whole army of consuming children, all maws wet and agape.

Oh dear, I went to J L Hudson myself. It had been a long time. I'm thinking GREENS!

J. L. Hudson ... a name I forgot since I left my home in Michigan.

Nasturtiums ...

I think it's gonna be buttercrunch, under shadecloth. Husband wants salad while he can still get it, and I can't say that I blame him.

PJ, thanks for the JL Hudson suggestion- I didn't know about them.

Can you fit buttercrunch AND nasturtiums AND turnips?

Nasturtium leaves add a delightful peppery bite, and turnip greens are the bomb-diggity when raw.

Ah, yes, salad -- hubby's favorite for me to plant in the garden...

Was going to suggest arugula rather than lettuce so you could enjoy it into colder months -- but when does Mr. Jack hard-freeze Frost hit Michigan? September?! (No experience, have only been nearby in Madison, WI in April as nothing was growing and ice was just breaking off the lakes. Seen enough... Decision made! No graduate school there for me -- Despite climbing mtns in the middle of January, I am a weather wimp and just fear your winters! You be tough people...)

Oh, thought to join your writing group if you don't mind, but I'd want to remain anon and have critique of the oft random ramblings I do at my blog? Would that work somehow?
