WE DID IT!

I worked at Obama headquarters in downtown Detroit all day yesterday, making phone calls for the final push to get out the vote in Detroit. The mood was ecstatic. There was a real sense of turning the page- or perhaps, closing the book. It was especially wonderful to talk to elderly black folks who had seen so much and waited so long- their joy was uncontainable. Detroit city feels like a very different place this morning. Car horns were blaring all night and I still hear them this morning. I feel so privledged to witness this amazing piece of American history.

Sanity and hope have returned to this country at last. It was wonderful to hear the cheers of folks in my neighborhood. I even let out a little "wooooooo" for the moment!

I'm with Rabbits' Guy on the bunny substitute. But, if der bunns was to take ill, who would run the country?
I was so overcome last night that I wept. The whole day was like a dream come true. Democracy can do what it promises.

I'm volunteering for Dubbya's Crawford Texas homecoming preparation crew. I'll be setting the radio to lock on Air America, rigging the TV to broadcast Keith Olberman 24/7 and rig up a chair like Alex had to sit in in "A Clockwork Orange" complete with those little clamps that hold his eyes open. Lots of vitamins to keep him alert and healthy for a long long time and someone to help him with the big words as his legacy is writ large. Don't want him to miss a moment.

I'm still pinching myself to double-check that it really happened. With all the late-night, international text messaging I was a party to, you'd think I'd believe it by now, but I guess it takes more than a few days to recover from 8 years of feeling resigned, disgusted and cynical. Optimism? Hope? You mean if I express my opinion as an informed citizen, someone in office might *listen*? *Wheeeeeeew*
and significant props to all those who canvassed nationwide.

PS: I vote they get a bunny too; and now about that vegetable garden on the White House lawn...
