The Underground Fruit Economy

(Not necessarily forbidden)
---
From today's New York Times, an article about the growing trend of urban fruit foraging. All over the US, folks are setting up backyard fruit exchanges, fruit expeditions, clubs that gather fallen fruit in public spaces- and then give half of their forage to food banks. Pretty cool, huh?

I love this idea! I was looking at Freecycle Posts last night. There were several people posting free fruit....all you had to do was pick it. Very Cool!

Oh Yeah. Once we lived in Arizona for a bit and had a lemon tree - two in fact. We hung a sack of lemons on the front fence one evening - said "free". Next morning there were three sacks there!

Kinda like Zuchinni in some places!

Sounds deliciously interesting. Around here citrus abounds as well as persimmons and cooking pears. I used to have an apple tree that did really well. They were smallish and only a little tart.

That's awesome.

There's a mulberry tree outside one of the businesses on our little loop road here. Every time i walk past it I think ahead to doing some foraging for a future dinner party!

I'm so psyched you posted this article - you must know about the people in california doing this? heh! Fabulous! Now if only I could reach the mulberries dropping from the tall tree near my apartment building...

Margo, mulberries are really, really good for one thing- homemade wine! Do it prison-style-- a quick ferment. Just add yeast and sugar, and remember to burp it. There are about a gazillion recipes online.

Get a long stick and knock the puppies out of the tree. Surely that's not cheating.
